About Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

23.01.2024

Part of Horizon Europe, the MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) are the European Union’s flagship funding programme for doctoral education and postdoctoral training of researchers. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fund excellent research and innovation and equip researchers at all stages of their career with new knowledge and skills, through mobility across borders and exposure to different sectors and disciplines.

The MSCA also fund the development of excellent doctoral and postdoctoral training programmes and collaborative research projects worldwide. By doing so, they achieve a structuring impact on higher education institutions, research centres and non-academic organisations.

There are 5 types of MSCA targeting different objectives:

  • Doctoral Networks

The objective of Doctoral Networks is to implement doctoral programmes by partnerships of organisations from different sectors across Europe and beyond to train highly skilled doctoral candidates, stimulate their creativity, enhance their innovation capacities and boost their employability in the long-term.

Doctoral Networks are open to international consortia of universities, research institutions, businesses, SMEs and other non-academic organisations.

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships

The objective of PFs is to support researchers’ careers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers.

PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors. Interested researchers submit an application together with a host organisation, which can be a university, research institution, business, SME or other organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. Researchers interested in PFs should have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications.

MSCA PF is a very competitive call and only top excellent proposals get funding. In this regard, there is another brilliant opportunity for Armenian researchers from Diaspora to come back to Armenia and perform research and innovation activities both for the benefit of researchers and Armenia - ERA Fellowships.

  •  Staff Exchanges

The Staff Exchanges action funds short-term international and inter-sectoral exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities of participating organisations.

The aim is to develop sustainable collaborative projects between different organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors (in particular SMEs), based in Europe and beyond.

Staff Exchanges are open to international consortia of universities, research institutions, businesses, SMEs and other non-academic organisations.

  • COFUND

The COFUND action provides funding for regional, national and international programmes for training and career development, through co-funding mechanisms. It spreads the MSCA’s best practices by promoting high standards and excellent working conditions. COFUND promotes sustainable training and international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility.

There are 2 types of COFUND:

  • Doctoral Programmes. They offer research training activities to allow doctoral candidates to develop and broaden their skills and competences. They will lead to the award of a doctoral degree.
  • Postdoctoral Programmes. They fund individual advanced research training and career development fellowships for postdoctoral researchers.

  •  MSCA and Citizens

The objective of the MSCA and Citizens action is to bring research and researchers closer to the public at large, with a focus notably on families, pupils and students. It does so through the organisation of the European Researchers’ Night, a research communication and promotion event taking place across EU Member States and Horizon Europe Associated Countries .
